Welcome to India!

I’ve officially been in India for a week! There’s so many sounds, colors, people, smells, and tastes it can be overwhelming at first but so far I really like it. Working with Sarah’s Covenant Homes has been a great experience as well. Every morning I start off with a cup of chai and some non-Indian food (I can’t do the spice that early in the morning!). I read my daily devotional and spend some times outside while it’s hot but not yet scorching. Then I take a 10 minute walk to Courage House. SCH is set up so there are 4 different houses in one neighborhood. Each house has multiple floors and each floor is a different foster family. Courage House has 3 different foster families so I spend my day there, working in each home. I start off with the toddler house in the morning. I help them eat breakfast and get ready for the day. After that I go up to top apartment. Nikki and Tori run a preschool for the blind in the morning. I get to hang out with Katherine*, a little girl who we think is deaf/blind and has some form of CP. I’m mainly working with her to find a ways to motivate and get her participating in preschool. She’s a sweetheart but seemingly unmotivated by much except food. The most expressive I’ve seen her was on Friday when we did water activities during preschool. I got some half smiles out of her then! I think with some more work and trying different things that we will be able to figure out some more ways to motivate Katherine!

In the afternoons I have a break and then go to another foster home at Courage. There are 13 boys who live there and they are full of energy. Its summer break right now in India and so all of the boys are home all day. I’ve been doing come activities with all of them for a part of the afternoon and then doing some 1:1 with some of the older boys. I have been reading books and playing games with them. There is a bad heat wave in India right now- it’s been 105-112 everyday since I’ve been here. On Thursday it started to rain so I took the boys up on the roof to play in the rain. It only rained for 5 minutes but it cooled it down enough play up there for a bit!

After I finish spending time with the boys I go back to the toddler house to help with dinner and getting them ready for bedtime. They’re a pretty great group of kids and I really enjoy playing with them. Then I walk back to Rescue Home and hang out. Some nights I walk to the store with the other volunteers or go out to eat. And then we usually stay up too late talking or watching movies. Sundays are my off days. Today I spent some time with the children at rescue watching a movie and just cuddling!

Thanks for all the prayers and support before I left and in my first week over here! I’m so thankful for everyone has prayed or sent me well wishes. I’m so excited to start this new season of my life!
